Israel, return to the LORD your God; for you have fallen because of your sin. See also: Joel 2:12-13Hosea 6:1Hosea 12:6Take words with you, and return to the LORD. We won’t ride on horses; neither will we say any more to the work of our hands, ‘Our gods!’ for in you the fatherless finds mercy.” See also: Psalms 10:14Psalms 68:5John 14:18“I will heal their waywardness. I will love them freely; for my anger is turned away from them. See also: Isaiah 57:18Jeremiah 3:22Isaiah 12:1I will be like the dew to Israel. He will blossom like the lily, and send down his roots like Lebanon. See also: Isaiah 35:2Ephesians 3:17Isaiah 27:6His branches will spread, and his beauty will be like the olive tree, and his fragrance like Lebanon. See also: Psalms 52:8Psalms 128:3Philippians 4:18Men will dwell in his shade. They will revive like the grain, and blossom like the vine. Their fragrance will be like the wine of Lebanon. See also: Psalms 91:1John 11:25Song of Songs 6:11Ephraim, what have I to do any more with idols? I answer, and will take care of him. I am like a green cypress tree; from me your fruit is found.” See also: Job 34:32James 1:17Isaiah 41:19Who is wise, that he may understand these things? Who is prudent, that he may know them? Notes in English 19th-century Catholic commentary by Fr. George Leo Haydock, shown as published.

These notes keep the polemics of their time: some speak harshly of the Jewish people or of other Christians. The Church teaches otherwise today. The Jewish people may not be blamed for the death of Christ (Nostra Aetate 4; Catechism 597–598), and Christians of other communities are our brothers and sisters in the Lord (Unitatis Redintegratio 3).
