You are righteous, LORD, when I contend with you; yet I would like to plead a case with you. Why does the way of the wicked prosper? Why are they all at ease who deal very treacherously? See also: Malachi 3:15Psalms 92:7Psalms 37:1You have planted them. Yes, they have taken root. They grow. Yes, they produce fruit. You are near in their mouth, and far from their heart. See also: Isaiah 29:13Titus 1:16Matthew 15:8But you, LORD, know me. You see me, and test my heart toward you. Pull them out like sheep for the slaughter, and prepare them for the day of slaughter. See also: 2 Kings 20:3Jeremiah 17:18Psalms 139:1-4How long will the land mourn, and the herbs of the whole country wither? Because of the wickedness of those who dwell therein, the animals and birds are consumed; because they said, “He won’t see our latter end.” See also: Jeremiah 9:10Psalms 107:34Jeremiah 4:25“If you have run with the footmen, and they have wearied you, then how can you contend with horses? Though in a land of peace you are secure, yet how will you do in the pride of the Jordan? See also: 1 Peter 4:12Proverbs 24:10Hebrews 12:3-4For even your brothers, and the house of your father, even they have dealt treacherously with you! Even they have cried aloud after you! Don’t believe them, though they speak beautiful words to you. See also: Proverbs 26:25Jeremiah 9:4Psalms 12:2“I have forsaken my house. I have cast off my heritage. I have given the dearly beloved of my soul into the hand of her enemies. See also: Psalms 78:59-60Isaiah 2:6Jeremiah 11:15My heritage has become to me as a lion in the forest. She has uttered her voice against me. Therefore I have hated her. See also: Amos 6:8Hosea 9:15Zechariah 11:8Is my heritage to me as a speckled bird of prey? Are the birds of prey against her all around? Go, assemble all the animals of the field. Bring them to devour. See also: Isaiah 56:9Jeremiah 7:33Revelation 19:17-18Many shepherds have destroyed my vineyard. They have trodden my portion under foot. They have made my pleasant portion a desolate wilderness. See also: Jeremiah 23:1Isaiah 5:1-7Isaiah 63:18They have made it a desolation. It mourns to me, being desolate. The whole land is made desolate, because no one cares. See also: Isaiah 42:25Jeremiah 23:10Jeremiah 14:2Destroyers have come on all the bare heights in the wilderness; for the sword of the LORD devours from the one end of the land even to the other end of the land. No flesh has peace. See also: Amos 9:4Jeremiah 47:6Isaiah 34:6They have sown wheat, and have reaped thorns. They have exhausted themselves, and profit nothing. You will be ashamed of your fruits, because of the LORD’s fierce anger.” See also: Deuteronomy 28:38Haggai 1:6Micah 6:15The LORD says, “Concerning all my evil neighbors, who touch the inheritance which I have caused my people Israel to inherit: Behold, I will pluck them up from off their land, and will pluck up the house of Judah from among them. See also: Zechariah 2:8Jeremiah 3:18Zechariah 10:6-12It will happen that after I have plucked them up, I will return and have compassion on them. I will bring them again, every man to his heritage, and every man to his land. See also: Jeremiah 49:6Jeremiah 48:47Jeremiah 49:39It will happen, if they will diligently learn the ways of my people, to swear by my name, ‘As the LORD lives;’ even as they taught my people to swear by Baal, then they will be built up in the middle of my people. See also: Jeremiah 4:2Joshua 23:7Zephaniah 1:5But if they will not hear, then I will pluck up that nation, plucking up and destroying it,” says the LORD. See also: Isaiah 60:12Psalms 2:8-121 Peter 2:6-8

Notes in English 19th-century Catholic commentary by Fr. George Leo Haydock, shown as published.

These notes keep the polemics of their time: some speak harshly of the Jewish people or of other Christians. The Church teaches otherwise today. The Jewish people may not be blamed for the death of Christ (Nostra Aetate 4; Catechism 597–598), and Christians of other communities are our brothers and sisters in the Lord (Unitatis Redintegratio 3).
