Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he began to reign. He reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Hamutal the daughter of Jeremiah of Libnah. See also: Joshua 10:292 Kings 24:182 Chronicles 36:11He did that which was evil in the LORD’s sight, according to all that Jehoiakim had done. See also: 1 Kings 14:222 Kings 24:19-20Ezekiel 17:16-20For through the LORD’s anger this happened in Jerusalem and Judah, until he had cast them out from his presence. Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon. See also: 2 Chronicles 36:13Isaiah 3:4-5Isaiah 3:1In the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month, in the tenth day of the month, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came, he and all his army, against Jerusalem, and encamped against it; and they built forts against it round about. See also: Jeremiah 39:1Zechariah 8:19Ezekiel 24:1-2So the city was besieged to the eleventh year of King Zedekiah. In the fourth month, in the ninth day of the month, the famine was severe in the city, so that there was no bread for the people of the land. See also: Jeremiah 39:2Isaiah 3:12 Kings 25:3Then a breach was made in the city, and all the men of war fled, and went out of the city by night by the way of the gate between the two walls, which was by the king’s garden. Now the Chaldeans were against the city all around. The men of war went toward the Arabah, See also: Jeremiah 51:322 Kings 25:4Jeremiah 39:4-7but the army of the Chaldeans pursued the king, and overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho; and all his army was scattered from him. See also: Jeremiah 34:21Jeremiah 38:23Jeremiah 21:7Then they took the king, and carried him up to the king of Babylon to Riblah in the land of Hamath; and he pronounced judgment on him. See also: Jeremiah 39:5Numbers 13:21Joshua 13:5The king of Babylon killed the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes. He also killed all the princes of Judah in Riblah. See also: Jeremiah 22:302 Kings 25:7Deuteronomy 28:34He put out the eyes of Zedekiah; and the king of Babylon bound him in fetters, and carried him to Babylon, and put him in prison until the day of his death. See also: Ezekiel 12:13Jeremiah 34:3-5Now in the fifth month, in the tenth day of the month, which was the nineteenth year of King Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard, who stood before the king of Babylon, came into Jerusalem. See also: 2 Kings 25:8Jeremiah 39:9Jeremiah 52:29He burned the LORD’s house, and the king’s house; and all the houses of Jerusalem, even every great house, he burned with fire. See also: Psalms 79:1Micah 3:122 Chronicles 36:19All the army of the Chaldeans, who were with the captain of the guard, broke down all the walls of Jerusalem all around. See also: Nehemiah 1:32 Kings 25:10Then Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard carried away captive of the poorest of the people, and the rest of the people who were left in the city, and those who fell away, who defected to the king of Babylon, and the rest of the multitude. See also: Zechariah 14:2Jeremiah 15:1-2But Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard left of the poorest of the land to be vineyard keepers and farmers. See also: Jeremiah 39:9-10Jeremiah 40:5-72 Kings 25:12The Chaldeans broke the pillars of bronze that were in the LORD’s house and the bases and the bronze sea that were in the LORD’s house in pieces, and carried all of their bronze to Babylon. See also: Jeremiah 27:19-22Jeremiah 52:21-232 Chronicles 4:12-15They also took away the pots, the shovels, the snuffers, the basins, the spoons, and all the vessels of bronze with which they ministered. See also: Numbers 4:141 Kings 7:45Exodus 27:3The captain of the guard took away the cups, the fire pans, the basins, the pots, the lamp stands, the spoons, and the bowls; that which was of gold, as gold, and that which was of silver, as silver. See also: 1 Kings 7:49-50Leviticus 26:12Numbers 16:46They took the two pillars, the one sea, and the twelve bronze bulls that were under the bases, which King Solomon had made for the LORD’s house. The bronze of all these vessels was without weight. See also: 1 Kings 7:472 Kings 25:162 Chronicles 4:18As for the pillars, the height of the one pillar was eighteen cubits; and a line of twelve cubits encircled it; and its thickness was four fingers. It was hollow. See also: 2 Kings 25:172 Chronicles 3:15-171 Kings 7:15-21A capital of bronze was on it; and the height of the one capital was five cubits, with network and pomegranates on the capital all around, all of bronze. The second pillar also had the same, with pomegranates. See also: Exodus 28:14-222 Chronicles 3:152 Kings 25:17There were ninety-six pomegranates on the sides; all the pomegranates were one hundred on the network all around. See also: 2 Kings 25:19Esther 1:14Matthew 18:10Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard took them, and brought them to the king of Babylon to Riblah. Notes in English 19th-century Catholic commentary by Fr. George Leo Haydock, shown as published.
These notes keep the polemics of their time: some speak harshly of the Jewish people or of other Christians. The Church teaches otherwise today. The Jewish people may not be blamed for the death of Christ (Nostra Aetate 4; Catechism 597–598), and Christians of other communities are our brothers and sisters in the Lord (Unitatis Redintegratio 3). Jeremiah 52:1
Ver. 1. Sedecias. This is purely historical, taken from 4 K. xxiv. 18, &c. Many doubt with reason the Jeremias inserted it, as he could not well be alive at the time when Joakim was honoured. v. 31. If he had written both this and the Book of Kings, the variations which we here discover would not be seen. It seems, therefore, that Esdras or some other has inserted it, to explain the fall of Jerusalem and the lamentations; as a similar addition has been made to Isaias.
C. xxxvi. &c. See Grot. C. --- The history occurs more at large, Par. ult. W.

Ver. 12. Tenth: 4 K. seventh, on which day Nabuzardan set out from Reblatha, according to some. But it was above sixty leagues, or hours journey, distant.
C. --- He entered the city on the 7th, and put his orders in execution on the 10th. Usher. --- Nothing of the king's imprisonment, or of the city poor occurs.

Ver. 28. Seventh year of Nabuchodonosor, and last of Joakim. 4 K. Sept. Rom.
omits this and the next verse, which are found in Theodoret and the Compl.
edit. C. --- Grabe supplies all from, And Juda, v. 27, to 31. H. --- Zuinglius observes that the Sept. have not a fragment of it, and that it has been added by some one to hide the ignominy of the Jews. It is interpolated in the Arab. of the Lond. Polyglot, and seems contrary to the true history. 4 K. xxiv. 14. Kennicott, Diss. 2.
↑ 28Jeremiah 52:31
Ver. 31. Joachin. He had been thrown into prison when 18 years old, and continued there 37
years. It is not probable that Jeremias wrote this. Evilmerodach had also been the same in prison.
--- Five: 4 K. has seven. Probably Nabuchodonosor died on the 25th, and his son then resolved to liberate Joachin; which he did on the 27th.
