Mass during the Day

  1. First reading Jeremiah 1:1, 4-10

1The words of Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah, one of the priests who were in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin. 4Now the LORD’s word came to me, saying, 5“Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you. Before you were born, I sanctified you. I have appointed you a prophet to the nations.” 6Then I said, “Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, I don’t know how to speak; for I am a child.” 7But the LORD said to me, “Don’t say, ‘I am a child;’ for you must go to whomever I send you, and you must say whatever I command you. 8Don’t be afraid because of them, for I am with you to rescue you,” says the LORD. 9Then the LORD stretched out his hand and touched my mouth. Then the LORD said to me, “Behold, I have put my words in your mouth. 10Behold, I have today set you over the nations and over the kingdoms, to uproot and to tear down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant.”

  2. Responsorial Psalm Psalms 71:1-2, 3-4a, 5-6ab, 15ab, 17

1In you, LORD, I take refuge. Never let me be disappointed. 2Deliver me in your righteousness, and rescue me. Turn your ear to me, and save me. 3Be to me a rock of refuge to which I may always go. Give the command to save me, for you are my rock and my fortress. 4Rescue me, my God, from the hand of the wicked, from the hand of the unrighteous and cruel man. 5For you are my hope, Lord GOD, my confidence from my youth. 6I have relied on you from the womb. You are he who took me out of my mother’s womb. I will always praise you. 15My mouth will tell about your righteousness, and of your salvation all day, though I don’t know its full measure. 17God, you have taught me from my youth. Until now, I have declared your wondrous works.

  3. Gospel Matthew 13:1-9

1On that day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the seaside. 2Great multitudes gathered to him, so that he entered into a boat and sat; and all the multitude stood on the beach. 3He spoke to them many things in parables, saying, “Behold, a farmer went out to sow. 4As he sowed, some seeds fell by the roadside, and the birds came and devoured them. 5Others fell on rocky ground, where they didn’t have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, because they had no depth of earth. 6When the sun had risen, they were scorched. Because they had no root, they withered away. 7Others fell among thorns. The thorns grew up and choked them. 8Others fell on good soil and yielded fruit: some one hundred times as much, some sixty, and some thirty. 9He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

  1. First reading Sirach 44:1, 10-15

1Let us now praise famous men, our ancestors in their generations. 10But these were men of mercy, whose righteous deeds have not been forgotten. 11A good inheritance remains with their offspring. Their children are within the covenant. 12Their offspring stand fast, with their children, for their sakes. 13Their offspring will remain forever. Their glory won’t be blotted out. 14Their bodies were buried in peace. Their name lives to all generations. 15People will declare their wisdom. The congregation proclaims their praise.

  2. Responsorial Psalm Psalms 132:11, 13-14, 17-18

11The LORD has sworn to David in truth. He will not turn from it: “I will set the fruit of your body on your throne. 13For the LORD has chosen Zion. He has desired it for his habitation. 14“This is my resting place forever. I will live here, for I have desired it. 17I will make the horn of David to bud there. I have ordained a lamp for my anointed. 18I will clothe his enemies with shame, but on himself, his crown will shine.”

  4. Gospel Matthew 13:16-17

16“But blessed are your eyes, for they see; and your ears, for they hear. 17For most certainly I tell you that many prophets and righteous men desired to see the things which you see, and didn’t see them; and to hear the things which you hear, and didn’t hear them.
