In the third year of Cyrus king of Persia a revelation was revealed to Daniel, whose name was called Belteshazzar. The revelation was true, even a great warfare. He understood the revelation, and had understanding of the vision. See also: Daniel 1:21Daniel 8:26Daniel 6:28In those days I, Daniel, was mourning three whole weeks. See also: Nehemiah 1:4Daniel 9:24-27Ezra 9:4-5I ate no pleasant bread. No meat or wine came into my mouth. I didn’t anoint myself at all, until three whole weeks were fulfilled. See also: Matthew 6:17Daniel 11:8Amos 5:11In the twenty-fourth day of the first month, as I was by the side of the great river, which is Hiddekel, See also: Genesis 2:14Ezekiel 1:3Daniel 8:2I lifted up my eyes and looked, and behold, there was a man clothed in linen, whose thighs were adorned with pure gold of Uphaz. See also: Ezekiel 9:2Daniel 12:6-7Revelation 1:13-15His body also was like beryl, and his face like the appearance of lightning, and his eyes like flaming torches. His arms and his feet were like burnished bronze. The voice of his words was like the voice of a multitude. See also: Revelation 19:12Revelation 1:13-17Matthew 17:2I, Daniel, alone saw the vision; for the men who were with me didn’t see the vision; but a great quaking fell on them, and they fled to hide themselves. See also: Acts 9:7Acts 22:9Genesis 3:10So I was left alone, and saw this great vision. No strength remained in me; for my face grew deathly pale, and I retained no strength. See also: Daniel 7:28Habakkuk 3:16Daniel 8:27Yet I heard the voice of his words. When I heard the voice of his words, then I fell into a deep sleep on my face, with my face toward the ground. See also: Daniel 8:18Genesis 15:12Job 4:13Behold, a hand touched me, which set me on my knees and on the palms of my hands. See also: Revelation 1:17Jeremiah 1:9Daniel 8:18He said to me, “Daniel, you greatly beloved man, understand the words that I speak to you. Stand upright, for I have been sent to you, now.” When he had spoken this word to me, I stood trembling. See also: Acts 26:16Mark 16:8Daniel 8:16-17Then he said to me, “Don’t be afraid, Daniel; for from the first day that you set your heart to understand, and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard. I have come for your words’ sake. See also: Acts 10:30-31Daniel 10:19Daniel 9:20-23But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me twenty-one days; but, behold, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me because I remained there with the kings of Persia. See also: Jude 1:9Daniel 12:1Daniel 10:20-21Now I have come to make you understand what will happen to your people in the latter days; for the vision is yet for many days.” See also: Daniel 8:26Daniel 2:28Habakkuk 2:3When he had spoken these words to me, I set my face toward the ground, and was mute. See also: Luke 1:20Ezekiel 24:27Daniel 8:18Behold, one in the likeness of the sons of men touched my lips. Then I opened my mouth, and spoke and said to him who stood before me, “My lord, by reason of the vision my sorrows have overtaken me, and I retain no strength. See also: Isaiah 6:7Daniel 8:15Jeremiah 1:9For how can the servant of my lord talk with my lord? For as for me, immediately there remained no strength in me. Notes in English 19th-century Catholic commentary by Fr. George Leo Haydock, shown as published.
These notes keep the polemics of their time: some speak harshly of the Jewish people or of other Christians. The Church teaches otherwise today. The Jewish people may not be blamed for the death of Christ (Nostra Aetate 4; Catechism 597–598), and Christians of other communities are our brothers and sisters in the Lord (Unitatis Redintegratio 3). Daniel 10:1
Ver. 1. Third. This concurs with the first of Darius. Cyrus then reigned in Persia, and the king is here often mentioned, as the vision happened near it, on the banks of the Tigris. Only twenty-one days had elapsed since the former.
--- Strength. Heb. "warfare," or determinate time. Job vii. 1.
This shall surely take place, but not soon. C. --- For. Prot. "and had understanding," &c. H. ---
He was informed of the meaning, or strove to know what the preceding vision denoted. C. ---
Pharao and Baltassar were not prophets, as they did not comprehend what they saw. For understanding is requisite, in order that a vision may be prophetical. S. Tho. ii. 2. q. 175 a. 2. W.
↑ 1Daniel 10:2
Ver. 2. Weeks. Marsham says twenty-one years. But it means only so many days. He began to mourn on the third of Nisan, and continued fasting (v. 4) it seems even on the sabbaths, and on the feast of Passover, till the 24th. C. ---
He was grieved that the people did not make use of the leave granted by Cyrus; (Theod.) or because the Samaritans had prevailed at court to have the temple forbidden; (Usher, A. 3470, and 1 Esd. i. 14.) or rather because he could not fully understand the former visions. C. ix. 30. and xii. 9. &c. C.
↑ 2Daniel 10:5
Ver. 5. Linen. Heb. baddim. --- Finest. Heb. uphaz, (H.) from Phasis or Ophir.
↑ 5Daniel 10:6
Ver. 6. Chrysolite. Heb. "Tharsis." This precious stone was perhaps greenish.
↑ 6Daniel 10:10
Ver. 10. Hand; the Holy Ghost, or rather the angel Gabriel.
↑ 10Daniel 10:11
Ver. 11. Desires most amiable. C. --- This new title is given to comfort the prophet. W.
↑ 11Daniel 10:13
Ver. 13. The prince, &c. That is, the angel guardian of Persia: who, according to his office, seeking the spiritual good of the Persians, was desirous that many of the Jews should remain among them. Ch. --- S. Jerom, &c. explain it of the angel guardian. W. --- Each country has an archangel over it, as individuals have an angel. Others assert that this was an evil angel; for how could a good one oppose so long the will of God? Yet this argument may be retorted, as evil spirits themselves must comply. It seems, therefore, that Cyrus was exhorted by the good angels to invade the Chaldeans, and thus to liberate God's people.
He was afraid of the hazardous attempt, and free-will may resist the inspirations of God. --- One, or "prince." C. --- Michael, and the guardian of Daniel, joined their prayers for the liberation of the Jews. v. 20. W.
↑ 13Daniel 10:14
Ver. 14. Days. It will not soon take place; or, I have many things to tell.
↑ 14Daniel 10:20
Ver. 20. To thee? He awakens his attention (v. 14. C.) and gratitude. H. ---
Prince, angel guardian; or Alexander, who would one day rout the Persians. C.
xi. 2. C.
↑ 20Daniel 10:21
Ver. 21. Of truth, in the former sealed visions. C. --- Your prince. The guardian general of the Church of God, (Ch.) as he was of the synagogue. C.
