“Run back and forth through the streets of Jerusalem, and see now, and know, and seek in its wide places, if you can find a man, if there is anyone who does justly, who seeks truth, then I will pardon her. See also: Genesis 18:23-322 Chronicles 16:9Ezekiel 22:30Though they say, ‘As the LORD lives,’ surely they swear falsely.” See also: Titus 1:16Jeremiah 4:2Leviticus 19:12O LORD, don’t your eyes look on truth? You have stricken them, but they were not grieved. You have consumed them, but they have refused to receive correction. They have made their faces harder than a rock. They have refused to return. See also: Jeremiah 2:30Jeremiah 7:282 Chronicles 16:9Then I said, “Surely these are poor. They are foolish; for they don’t know the LORD’s way, nor the law of their God. See also: Hosea 4:6Jeremiah 8:7Matthew 11:5I will go to the great men and will speak to them, for they know the way of the LORD, and the law of their God.” But these with one accord have broken the yoke, and burst the bonds. See also: Jeremiah 2:20James 2:5-7Psalms 2:2-3Therefore a lion out of the forest will kill them. A wolf of the evenings will destroy them. A leopard will watch against their cities. Everyone who goes out there will be torn in pieces, because their transgressions are many and their backsliding has increased. See also: Jeremiah 4:7Habakkuk 1:8Zephaniah 3:3“How can I pardon you? Your children have forsaken me, and sworn by what are no gods. When I had fed them to the full, they committed adultery, and assembled themselves in troops at the prostitutes’ houses. See also: Joshua 23:7Galatians 4:8Jeremiah 2:11They were as fed horses roaming at large. Everyone neighed after his neighbor’s wife. See also: Jeremiah 13:27Deuteronomy 5:182 Samuel 11:2-4Shouldn’t I punish them for these things?” says the LORD. “Shouldn’t my soul be avenged on such a nation as this? See also: Jeremiah 9:9Jeremiah 5:29Isaiah 1:24“Go up on her walls, and destroy, but don’t make a full end. Take away her branches, for they are not the LORD’s. See also: Jeremiah 4:27Ezekiel 12:16Hosea 1:9For the house of Israel and the house of Judah have dealt very treacherously against me,” says the LORD. See also: Jeremiah 3:20Isaiah 48:8Hosea 6:7They have denied the LORD, and said, “It is not he. Evil won’t come on us. We won’t see sword or famine. See also: 2 Chronicles 36:16Psalms 10:61 Samuel 6:9The prophets will become wind, and the word is not in them. Thus it will be done to them.” See also: Jeremiah 14:15Job 8:2Jeremiah 14:13Therefore the LORD, the God of Armies says, “Because you speak this word, behold, I will make my words in your mouth fire, and this people wood, and it will devour them. See also: Jeremiah 23:29Jeremiah 1:9Hosea 6:5Behold, I will bring a nation on you from far away, house of Israel,” says the LORD. “It is a mighty nation. It is an ancient nation, a nation whose language you don’t know and don’t understand what they say. See also: Deuteronomy 28:49Jeremiah 4:16Isaiah 33:19Their quiver is an open tomb. They are all mighty men. See also: Isaiah 5:28Psalms 5:9Romans 3:13They will eat up your harvest and your bread, which your sons and your daughters should eat. Notes in English 19th-century Catholic commentary by Fr. George Leo Haydock, shown as published.
These notes keep the polemics of their time: some speak harshly of the Jewish people or of other Christians. The Church teaches otherwise today. The Jewish people may not be blamed for the death of Christ (Nostra Aetate 4; Catechism 597–598), and Christians of other communities are our brothers and sisters in the Lord (Unitatis Redintegratio 3).
