This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, which was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar. See also: 2 Kings 25:1-2Jeremiah 39:1-2Jeremiah 25:1Now at that time the king of Babylon’s army was besieging Jerusalem. Jeremiah the prophet was shut up in the court of the guard, which was in the king of Judah’s house. See also: Jeremiah 37:21Nehemiah 3:25Jeremiah 33:1For Zedekiah king of Judah had shut him up, saying, “Why do you prophesy, and say, ‘The LORD says, “Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will take it; See also: Jeremiah 34:2-3Jeremiah 21:4-7Jeremiah 26:8-9and Zedekiah king of Judah won’t escape out of the hand of the Chaldeans, but will surely be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon, and will speak with him mouth to mouth, and his eyes will see his eyes; See also: Jeremiah 38:232 Kings 25:4-7Jeremiah 37:17and he will bring Zedekiah to Babylon, and he will be there until I visit him,” says the LORD, “though you fight with the Chaldeans, you will not prosper”’?” See also: Jeremiah 27:22Ezekiel 17:15Jeremiah 33:5Jeremiah said, “The LORD’s word came to me, saying, ‘Behold, Hanamel the son of Shallum your uncle will come to you, saying, “Buy my field that is in Anathoth; for the right of redemption is yours to buy it.”’” See also: Jeremiah 1:1Leviticus 25:25Jeremiah 11:21“So Hanamel my uncle’s son came to me in the court of the guard according to the LORD’s word, and said to me, ‘Please buy my field that is in Anathoth, which is in the land of Benjamin; for the right of inheritance is yours, and the redemption is yours. Buy it for yourself.’ “Then I knew that this was the LORD’s word. See also: Jeremiah 32:7Jeremiah 32:21 Samuel 10:3-7I bought the field that was in Anathoth of Hanamel my uncle’s son, and weighed him the money, even seventeen shekels of silver. See also: Esther 3:9Zechariah 11:12-131 Kings 20:39I signed the deed, sealed it, called witnesses, and weighed the money in the balances to him. See also: Jeremiah 32:44Jeremiah 32:12Job 14:17So I took the deed of the purchase, both that which was sealed, containing the terms and conditions, and that which was open; See also: Luke 2:271 Corinthians 11:16Acts 26:3and I delivered the deed of the purchase to Baruch the son of Neriah, the son of Mahseiah, in the presence of Hanamel my uncle’s son, and in the presence of the witnesses who signed the deed of the purchase, before all the Jews who sat in the court of the guard. See also: Jeremiah 32:16Jeremiah 51:59Jeremiah 36:26“I commanded Baruch before them, saying, the LORD of Armies, the God of Israel, says: ‘Take these deeds, this deed of the purchase which is sealed, and this deed which is open, and put them in an earthen vessel, that they may last many days.’ For the LORD of Armies, the God of Israel says: ‘Houses and fields and vineyards will yet again be bought in this land.’ See also: Zechariah 3:10Amos 9:14-15Jeremiah 30:18Now after I had delivered the deed of the purchase to Baruch the son of Neriah, I prayed to the LORD, saying, See also: Philippians 4:6-7Genesis 32:9-12Jeremiah 12:1“Ah Lord GOD! Behold, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm. There is nothing too hard for you. See also: Luke 1:37Jeremiah 32:27Genesis 18:14You show loving kindness to thousands, and repay the iniquity of the fathers into the bosom of their children after them. The great, the mighty God, the LORD of Armies is your name: See also: Jeremiah 10:16Deuteronomy 5:9-10Exodus 34:7great in counsel, and mighty in work; whose eyes are open to all the ways of the children of men, to give everyone according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings; See also: Jeremiah 17:10Matthew 16:27Psalms 62:12who performed signs and wonders in the land of Egypt, even to this day, both in Israel and among other men; and made yourself a name, as it is today; See also: Nehemiah 9:10Acts 7:36Psalms 135:9and brought your people Israel out of the land of Egypt with signs, with wonders, with a strong hand, with an outstretched arm, and with great terror; See also: Deuteronomy 26:8Exodus 6:61 Chronicles 17:21and gave them this land, which you swore to their fathers to give them, a land flowing with milk and honey. See also: Exodus 3:8Exodus 13:5Jeremiah 11:5They came in and possessed it, but they didn’t obey your voice and didn’t walk in your law. They have done nothing of all that you commanded them to do. Therefore you have caused all this evil to come upon them. See also: Ezra 9:7Daniel 9:10-14Psalms 78:54-55“Behold, siege ramps have been built against the city to take it. The city is given into the hand of the Chaldeans who fight against it, because of the sword, of the famine, and of the pestilence. What you have spoken has happened. Behold, you see it. See also: Jeremiah 33:4Joshua 23:15-16Jeremiah 32:36You have said to me, Lord GOD, ‘Buy the field for money, and call witnesses;’ whereas the city is given into the hand of the Chaldeans.” See also: Jeremiah 32:24John 13:7Psalms 97:2Then the LORD’s word came to Jeremiah, saying, “Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh. Is there anything too hard for me? See also: Matthew 19:26Jeremiah 32:17Isaiah 64:8Therefore the LORD says: Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the Chaldeans, and into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and he will take it. See also: Jeremiah 32:3Jeremiah 19:7-12Jeremiah 32:36The Chaldeans, who fight against this city, will come and set this city on fire, and burn it with the houses on whose roofs they have offered incense to Baal, and poured out drink offerings to other gods, to provoke me to anger. See also: Jeremiah 21:10Jeremiah 19:132 Chronicles 36:19“For the children of Israel and the children of Judah have done only that which was evil in my sight from their youth; for the children of Israel have only provoked me to anger with the work of their hands, says the LORD. See also: Jeremiah 7:22-26Jeremiah 25:7Isaiah 63:10For this city has been to me a provocation of my anger and of my wrath from the day that they built it even to this day, so that I should remove it from before my face, See also: 2 Kings 23:27Jeremiah 6:6-7Jeremiah 5:9-11because of all the evil of the children of Israel and of the children of Judah, which they have done to provoke me to anger—they, their kings, their princes, their priests, their prophets, the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem. See also: Isaiah 1:4-6Daniel 9:8Jeremiah 2:26They have turned their backs to me, and not their faces. Although I taught them, rising up early and teaching them, yet they have not listened to receive instruction. See also: Jeremiah 7:13Jeremiah 2:27Ezekiel 8:16But they set their abominations in the house which is called by my name, to defile it. See also: Jeremiah 7:30Ezekiel 8:5-162 Kings 21:4-7They built the high places of Baal, which are in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to cause their sons and their daughters to pass through fire to Molech, which I didn’t command them. It didn’t even come into my mind, that they should do this abomination, to cause Judah to sin.” See also: Jeremiah 7:312 Chronicles 33:6Leviticus 18:21Now therefore the LORD, the God of Israel, says concerning this city, about which you say, “It is given into the hand of the king of Babylon by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence:” See also: Jeremiah 32:3Jeremiah 32:24Jeremiah 32:28“Behold, I will gather them out of all the countries where I have driven them in my anger, and in my wrath, and in great indignation; and I will bring them again to this place. I will cause them to dwell safely. See also: Jeremiah 23:3Ezekiel 34:12-14Jeremiah 23:6Then they will be my people, and I will be their God. See also: Ezekiel 11:19-20Jeremiah 24:7Hebrews 8:10I will give them one heart and one way, that they may fear me forever, for their good and the good of their children after them. See also: Ezekiel 11:19-20Acts 4:32John 17:21I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from following them, to do them good. I will put my fear in their hearts, that they may not depart from me. See also: Jeremiah 31:31-33Ezekiel 36:26Jeremiah 24:7Yes, I will rejoice over them to do them good, and I will plant them in this land assuredly with my whole heart and with my whole soul.” See also: Jeremiah 24:6Zephaniah 3:17Amos 9:15For the LORD says: “Just as I have brought all this great evil on this people, so I will bring on them all the good that I have promised them. See also: Jeremiah 31:28Joshua 23:14-15Zechariah 8:14-15Fields will be bought in this land, about which you say, ‘It is desolate, without man or animal. It is given into the hand of the Chaldeans.’ See also: Jeremiah 32:15Ezekiel 37:11-14Jeremiah 32:36Men will buy fields for money, sign the deeds, seal them, and call witnesses, in the land of Benjamin, and in the places around Jerusalem, in the cities of Judah, in the cities of the hill country, in the cities of the lowland, and in the cities of the South; for I will cause their captivity to be reversed,” says the LORD. Notes · Haydock (1859, public domain)22 notes

Notes in English 19th-century Catholic commentary by Fr. George Leo Haydock, shown as published.

These notes keep the polemics of their time: some speak harshly of the Jewish people or of other Christians. The Church teaches otherwise today. The Jewish people may not be blamed for the death of Christ (Nostra Aetate 4; Catechism 597–598), and Christians of other communities are our brothers and sisters in the Lord (Unitatis Redintegratio 3). ↑ 35

Jeremiah 32:37

Ver. 37. Lands. What is here said must be understood of the captives, yet in such a manner that Christians are more particularly designated, for the Jews never enjoyed such perfect security, nor followed one way, nor enjoyed the eternal covenant, (v. 39. 40. C. xxxi. 31. C.) except those who embraced the true faith of Christ. At all times one religion alone can be pleasing to God, (v.

39.) and those who were saved under the old law, must have believed in a Redeemer to come, as we must do in one already past. H. --- God would not suffer true believers to become extinct under the old law; much less will he since Christ's coming. W.

↑ 37

Jeremiah 32:41

Ver. 41. Truth, like a tree which shall not be eradicated.

↑ 41

Jeremiah 32:44

Ver. 44. Juda, and in. A farther description of these cities is given, situated about the capital, Hebron, Sephala, ( the plain) near Gaza, (C.) and the Negeb or south country, (H.) towards Arabia.

Here the excellent commentary of S. Jerom ends, to our great loss. C. --- It was perhaps his last work, undertaken after the twelve minor and the other three great prophets. He never wrote on Baruch, on the epistle of Jeremias, the Gr.

parts of Daniel, &c. as the Jews did not allow them to be canonical, and the point was not then decided. The Church styles S. Jerom "the greatest doctor in expounding the sacred Scriptures," as he translated and illustrated the greatest part of them; (H.) and indeed he seems to have been the best qualified for the undertaking, of all the fathers.

Du Pin. --- Hence we may lament the more that we have not all his works in their genuine purity and perfection, as even the latest editions are very faulty, and proceed upon a plan which the learned do not approve. See A. Butler, Kennicott, &c. H.
